In BackTo20/20 we talk a lot about process.

Measurements, lens use, and all the steps and details that yield the most potential for progressing towards better distance vision.

I figure it makes sense to have it that way.

20 minute sessions, you know exactly what to expect.  Follow the process, no fluff, and a consistent platform to help you troubleshoot challenges and field questions.  It’s the most efficient system I could come up with.

And yet … I struggle with the aspect, of “soul”.  It’s sort of if you were to look in through a window into a gym at any given day at 6PM.  What do you see?  Scores of rather similar looking people, headphones stuck in their ears, running on treadmills.  Expensive running shoes, yoga pants, Apple watches.  They’re all plugged in, running in pace, staring at TV screens in front of them.

In the same way, is that what we want this site to be?  A mindless factory for better eyesight?

Of course that’s really up to you.  I’m not going to force some ideology on you.  My program is just the tools and ingredients.  Beyond that, what you do with the better eyes, is really up to you.

And here’s a little side track for you, since it’s the blog.  Blog, place for various digressions.

Healthy Eyes & A String Of Random Adventures

When I was really getting into improving my own eyesight, I realized that I needed more outdoor, distance vision time.  I started coming up with all sorts of ways to keep me away from screens.  I started traveling a lot more, I picked up various more or less extreme sports, I cultivated new hobbies.

My goal was really just better eyesight.  Anything to not be looking at computers.

Picture an accountant calculating the best trajectory for life.  I wasn’t really looking for fun.  I was looking for eyesight results.

Being 40 now, looking back at this period of my life, I can tell you this:  I did more in the last seven or so years than in the 33 years prior.  I learned to fly.  Hang gliding and ultralight planes in Florida, and paragliders in Utah.  Last year (or the year before?) I ended up spending several months paragliding in Nepal.  I wound up at Burning Man twice, both times in some decidedly non-conventional ways (fun stories, those – maybe not appropriate for here).  I spent months on road trips criss crossing the United States.  I found myself in South America for months on end, and floated around quite a bit in Europe.  I moved to Asia.  I put tens of thousands of miles on motorbikes riding through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.  I learned to butcher conversations in a few more languages, started a coffee business, and even turned my own eyesight recovery into a system (for you!).

And most recently, I found time for some family building of my own.  Four more weeks till birth time!  :-)

I bet that’ll be a real distraction from screen time.

Seven years.  All that, was just meant as ways to get away from computer screens.

What am I trying to tell you?

Take a step back, perhaps.  Think about the “why”.  Why are you here, reading?  And don’t listen to the excuses the little voice in your head likes to inject into your stream of consciousness.  I’m talking about just one single adventure, today, this week.  This month.

That’s how it starts.  Your story, written one word at a time.

Here’s a little parting thought for you:  As long as whatever can be on a screen is going to be more interesting than real life, the screen will win sooner or later.

A lot of times I get people telling me that they can’t live like me.  And yet, it’s not about copying whatever anybody else is doing.  It’s little things, little doors to adventure that are there, no matter who or where you are.  Whatever might be possible today, besides browsing Facebook.

To help with an example, I dragged the camera gear with me on yesterday’s outing.  Just for a few hours away from screens.  ;-)
