Johnny posts his latest update in the forum:

Hi everyone, time for an update on my progress

Well this is the big one….the short version of it is that I’ve stopped wearing correction completely during the day! Even though this has been something beyond my wildest dreams for years and years when it actually happened it felt like a non-event. I feel I should be more excited but it wasn’t a huge jump in terms of eyesight and blur, as my uncorrected vision was already pretty usable. Having said that it was still a big step, more in terms of the whole psychological dependence aspect of it all – can I really go without correction? what if I cant see something? Maybe the step down is too great? But anyway, things were looking ok on a morning without wearing contacts so I took a bit of a jump into the dark and yes, it was challenging, but my vision has improved and I am getting 20/20 some days in good sunlight. I stopped wearing contact lenses in mid march so it took me roughly 2 years and 1 month to go from -5.50 in each eye to where I am now. That is a pretty good result I think! And I am very keen to point out that I most definitely did have axial elongation as I had a retinal tear which I had to have operated on (and which motivated me to fix my eyesight). I also didn’t sign up for the paid course, I just used the blog. And as I have said in so many of my posts on here, the major factor I credit with helping me fix my eyesight so rapidly is the fact I spend the majority of my time using distance vision outdoors. I read a lot of posts on here from people who get frustrated and seem stuck on a plateau, but still seemingly spend the majority of their time doing close up. While I appreciate not everyone has the ability to suddenly switch to heaps of outdoor time, for those that are serious about fixing their eyesight I cannot encourage you enough to get outdoors. As stimulus it works like nothing else!

Where to from here? Well I still have some persistent double vision during the day which has been slowly resolving, but again I am very hungry and fatigued from this. I’ve stopped exercising this past week and have upped my calorie intake and have noticed good progress with double vision. Still sleeping like a log and having mad dreams…I’ll miss them if they do go. I guess this steady progress should continue until such time that my vision is reliably 20/20…some days it’s really good, others it’s frustratingly bad, but on the whole it is noticeably improving. I’ll keep you posted on this! I’m also experiencing my first winter in about 6 years and this is giving me extra challenge on overcast and rainy days, although I have made good progress with this simply because I have been using my vision in these conditions.

Night vision and artificial light however are another matter. My vision in both regards still sucks, with night vision to the extent of about -1.25 to -1.75 diopters, and artificial light probably about -0.75 to -1.00. As for my daytime vision I have seen steady improvements with both night vision and artificial light, and I continue to do exercises at dusk although I haven’t got around to buying a digital clock for night time work. Must get onto that. But for now vision in both respects is pretty lame and if I go out I wear a pair of contacts (-1.25 at the moment) although the other night I went out uncorrected and I did think to myself ‘this is coming along’. In any case I’ll keep working on this and report back but progress is definitely slow.

So all up, pretty f**king good stuff! My eyes look way healthier as well since I stopped wearing contacts (and I wore these for a long time prior to fixing my vision). My only hope is that I have done enough to avoid any further eye issues down the track…that retinal tear was a very sobering experience and I have no desire to repeat it. Maybe one day I’ll actually have the temperament to visit an optometrist again….

I guess I should finish by saying a big thank you to Jake for maintaining and developing this resource, and to Alex before him. Truly life changing stuff and I am forever indebted to both of you for giving me the tools to fix my vision ? On a related matter – Jake buddy, we need to meet up. I’ve never been to Thailand so this is a good excuse as any. I’ll be in touch and I’ll head over at some point.

Hope everyone is making good progress!

Johnny

Those are some strong 20/20 gains, for a pretty short two years.  Nicely done, Johnny!

The hardest part in all of this is just taking the first step.  Very much unlike signing up for a gym membership you’ll probably never use, the @endmyopia method actually pulls you in, gets you curious and engaged, and you’ll be driven to keep making those improvements.  All you have to do is push off, and the rest will almost take care of itself (not to discount the many efforts and persistence from students, and Johnny’s awesome two-year near recovery).

Cheers,

-Jake
