I mentioned recently how much I’m not into social media.
But the social media manager here, which is an actual position and part of the team, makes a strong case for social. Gracey, our brilliant Twitter captain. Yes, you guys here mostly today, aren’t into social (neither am I). But Gracey is a real pro, and she has all the stats and numbers to back up her point. The future is in social media. The future audience, the myopes we want to reach, play around on Instagram all day.
I say, Gracey, darling. Our readers today care not about social. I don’t like social. How about you do your thing, and I’ll just stay all old school.
But from things like “social proof”, to the trends in online time spent by age ranges, it’s either start going there, or become a fossil that’s blogging on some Website. I also don’t really see the point of posting pictures and picking filters, and tweeting things. But … you know already. All the upcoming younglings with bad eyes, that’s where they are.
And long term, Jake, Gracey says. Just do it, post, don’t worry about the numbers. Put yourself out there. Let people connect to the real you, and your message will resonate. The future is being super personal with your audience.
That’s why we pay her the big bucks, I guess.
So I do have an Instagram account, here. You-know-who talked me into posting stuff that I might do, whilst not necessarily working on #endmyopia related things.
I’ve only committed to doing Twitter, but with the ongoing nagging you’ll be able to online-stalk me via other outlets as well. You probably already know about the YouTube channel. I’m going to continue resisting things like Snapchat, as long as possible. And there won’t be much pushing, promoting, advertising, for any of those things, for the foreseeable future. I’ll just be adding things on occasion, keep it all in the mix for possible more serious activity at some point later on.
There we go. Just think twice before starting any Web project, imagining it’ll just be a quick Website and a few blog posts. It’s a never ending thing that will eat all of your time and private life. ;-)
Cheers,
-Jake
