Diopters.  We stopped calling glasses “prescriptions” a while back, since we don’t believe a reasonable educated individual needs a so-called professional to tell them which piece of clear, curved piece of plastic to buy.  (or conversely, keep you from making your own diopter choices)

If anything, we believe that most of the mainstream will give you more diopters than you need, causing progressive myopia and all sorts of long term risky side effects.  We feel strongly about education you on the subject of testing your own refraction, of making your own diopter choices.  Glasses are far less dangerous than lots of over-the-counter drugs!  Read this section for all things related to diopters, learn about the fascinating world of bending light (to your will).

Do Glasses Create Myopia? Look at this Monkey Study

For those of you who are interested in studies of the significant myopia-inducing effects of minus lenses on the eye take a look a this abstract. This is from the  IOVS (Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science), an ARVO journal. ** If you enjoy this post, "like" it on Facebook, help me spread vision health knowledge! A quick excerpt: Methods. Starting at 3 weeks of age, eight infant monkeys were reared wearing −3 diopter (D) spectacle lenses over one eye that produced [...]

Should I Stop Wearing Glasses?

I see this question a lot, in various forms.  Let's look at similar prescription related mistakes: Wearing under corrected lenses, without understanding active focus. Never getting eye checkups, for fear or bad news / higher prescription. Not ever wearing glasses, despite myopia diagnosis of several diopters. The instinct, of course, is the correct one. A false focal plane, as it is created by glasses, is in concept not good for your eyes.  Further, if you wear one, and [...]

Reducing Potential Harmful Prescription Complexity

Have you seen your eyeglass prescription recently?  If you haven't, it might be worth a look! Chances are, it is anything but straightforward, and looks like something in the above image.  There will be a difference between your left and right eye spherical values.  Then, there will most likely be an astigmatism correction.  This one adds a whole lot of complexity to the lens that you see the world through.  You have different values for each eye, and then also [...]

Should You Use Bi-Focals To Improve Your Vision Health?

There is a whole Installment in the Child Myopia Web Program dedicated to this topic. Bi-focals give you the opportunity to combine near-vision needs and distance-needs into one convenient prescription. Two set of lenses, in one pair of glasses. Genius, yes? Not necessarily. First of, we have the problem of prescription complexity. One of the rules of the #endmyopia Method is that we always, always want to reduce and eliminate prescription complexity. So bi-focals already don't pass that test, just based [...]

Hurting Your Eyes: Your Prescription is Too Strong

It's probably the thing I find myself saying most, in my day-to-day life:  "Your prescription is too strong."  My name could be Alex, your-prescription-is-too-strong, #endmyopia. Guest Post: Jake’s Latest Fashion Frame Adventure

Hi, I'm Jake. I'm addicted to fashion frames. Alex invited me to guest post. I started the eyesight recovery journey with a -4.00 prescription, currently down to -2.25 (most of the time). I spend quite a bit of time sweet talking optic shops, making deals, getting custom things made. Playing with auto refractors, all the eye checking gear, shopping for glasses on multiple continents and more than nine countries, so far. For me, the key to ongoing progress is active [...]
