Since we are still in the Christmas spirit, and soon will be in the New Years spirit, here is a somewhat questionable way to look at focus pushing:

I am not recommending this. This is merely a “what if” scenario. Use at your own discretion.

You push focus. You have done the Vision Improvement Course for a while. You know all the terms (close-up focus pushing, differential prescription, etc.)

And now you are in the holiday spirit, you are having a glass of wine. You are browsing the blog.

You are looking for some new and interesting articles.

It is only for this circumstance, that I am offering this article, merely for your entertainment:

Sometimes, your ciliary muscle might relax better, after a glass (or two but not much more) of wine. You might find that it’s easier to get a quick blink, and pull the text on your screen (or page) into focus. You might find this working nicely even late in the day, even if you neglected good vision habits during the holidays.

This is not a practice to get into. I don’t want any of my readers to turn into alcoholics.

But if you are already having a glass of wine anyway, and this article isn’t plunging you into rampant alcoholism, you might as well give some focus pushing a try. And you might find that it works rather well.

What Do We Take Away From This?

The ciliary (focusing) muscle is … a muscle. Too much close-up causes too much tension. Alcohol, in some circumstances, can help relieve the tension, which can happen very quickly in response to close-up strain.

You don’t want to start having a glass of wine at work, or every day, just based on this article.

Instead, this is just one more way to realize that if without the wine you have a hard time focusing, and with the wine you get five more centimeters, that a little less strain goes a long way. Following my advice to take breaks, have good lighting, use the correct close-up prescription, goes a long way.

And in the spirit of holidays, we can even use a little wine to demonstrate all of this, in a less clinical, and more entertaining fashion.

Enjoy (responsibly),
