You already know what I think of most optometrist’s advice.

Yes, sure.  If you don’t care about your eyes and want a quick fix, by all means .. get that gigantic minus prescription.

But then there’s the other contingent of foolish advice.  (mostly online, this)

I’m talking of course about the guys who tell you to never wear glasses.

Whenever you read anywhere that you shouldn’t wear glasses at all, just close the tab.  Click, out, nothing else they say warrants reading.  Even if they made sense, even if they got some things right.  Forget people and places that advocate no glasses.

Why the harsh words, Jakeface?

Well .. the problem is that you don’t want to take advice from people who don’t truly understand what’s going on.  (I’m sternly resolved not to call people idiots, when writing here)

Eyesight is about clear vision.

And recovering eyesight, protecting eyesight, improving eyesight, is about adding stimulus.

That means, a bit of blur, in some of the range of your vision, some of the time.  I have to say this now more than ever, since I’m doing the online thing.  The Web is a mangey dog riddled with the fleas of misinformation and half-truths.

I’m here for you, flea shampoo in hand.

Tell me more, Jake.  I’m totally paying attention.

Kim writes in the forum:

quotes-blueDespite only able to read 20/20 with my old normalized 4.75(L) 5.75(R) glasses with active focus, I went with what Neha suggested, which is go ahead and move down to another normalized prescription.

I decided to use my old differential prescription from February as my new normalized prescription (4.25 and 5.25). Also, after reading Christian’s post, I decided to be good and start wearing my glasses (even for up close). Just yesterday, I was able to see the 20/20 line with my new normalized prescription!! 😀 I tried on my old pair of normalized prescription and was able to see the 20/15 line. A lot of progress in one week.

The lack of eye strain that comes from wearing the glasses definitely help and sped up progress. I also ordered my new differential prescription (3.25(L) 4.25(R)).

Weeee! Thanks everyone for getting me out of this rut!”

Woof.

Full thread here, if you have forum access.

Sure, sometimes it’s nice to go without glasses.  And we talk about the no-glasses topic a lot.  Here and here and you can do a search as well (magnifying glass in the top menu).  And of course Kim is referring to Christian’s recent post on his findings when returning to glasses.
