I get this question a lot, and consistently.  It is probably the biggest reason that people are highly skeptical about the premise of rehabilitation.

Let me illustrate they ‘why’, with some images:

This is the 5 year stock trend for Essilor.

Wikipedia describes the company this way:

Essilor International S.A. is a French company that produces ophthalmic lenses along with ophthalmic optical equipment. It is based in Paris, France, and quoted on the Euronext Paris Stock Exchange. As one of the 40 largest companies traded in Paris, it is a component of the CAC 40 share index.

Essilor is responsible for creating Varilux, the world’s first progressive lens which corrects presbyopia and allows clear vision in the wearer’s near, intermediate and far vision. The company formed from the merger of ophthalmic firms Essel and Silor in 1972. Essilor now operates in over 100 countries over five continents. Its activities are largely focused on research and development. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses,

There is nothing sinister here, we are looking at this to consider economic realities.  This is a 16 Billion USD per year company, making lenses for your glasses.

Let’s compare that phenomenal growth of this French company, with the French economy over the same time period:

There we have France gross domestic product.  Does not reflect the strong upward trend of our lens makers, yes?

Let’s look at one more:

luxottica-chart

 Wikipedia describes Luxottica:

Luxottica Group S.p.A. is the world’s largest eyewear company, controlling over 80% of the world’s major eyewear brands.[2][3]Its best known brands are Ray-Ban and Persol. It also makes sunglasses and prescription frames for a multitude of designer brands such as Chanel and Prada, whose designs and trademarks are used under license. Luxottica also makes sunglasses branded Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Stella McCartney, Versace, Vogue, Miu Miu, Tory Burch, and Donna Karan.[4] Its prime competitor is the Safilo Group S.p.A.

Loxottica is based in Italy.  Let’s look at how Italy has done economically, in the past five years:

Well, that is even worse than France!  And clearly, one company doing a whole lot better than the country as a whole.

What is the lesson, here?

Let’s call it “economic reality”.

If you and I changed the world tomorrow.  If we had a way to eliminate the corporate influence on the institutions that train future optometrists and ophthalmologists,  and the corporate influence over government policy making, and thereby brought actual reversal of myopia to the forefront.

What would happen?

Hundreds of thousands of jobs would be destroyed.  Hundreds of thousands of retail shops would go out of business.  A huge multi-billion dollar industry would cease to exist.  Myopia would be wiped out within a generation, with proper close-up habits, and preventative prescriptions.

Also, all the optometrists and ophthalmologists would be out of a job.

What are the chances of this ever happening?

The reality is that even training someone to practice myopia prevention and rehabilitation, is training somebody to make their own job obsolete.  Would you go to school, to be a doctor that the world will not need, if you are good at your job?  How would you pay for your student loans?  What would you do for a living?

Myopia is not a life threatening condition.  Myopia is, by most accounts, an inconvenience.  On the other side, it creates a whole lot of economic benefit, for shareholders, tax authorities, and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Will any large media outlet ever want to alienate their clientele (advertisers)?  Will anyone who understands the full implications of advocating myopia rehabilitation on a large scale, ever actually voice this alternative?

Of course not.  It makes no sense, and it would create far more financial harm than anyone wants to be responsible for.

Meanwhile, most myopes prefer the quick fix of glasses, and not having to change any close-up habits, to the premise of spending time to build better habits, manage their eyesight health, and see slow ongoing improvements.  There is no volume on this side of the equation.  Only a minority of individuals will ever seek out this alternative, to a life with glasses.

All that said, I do hope that you are enjoying better eyesight, today (and share this opportunity with your friends).
